Motion-sensitive cameras in central Newfoundland's Terra Nova National Park have captured images of animals as people rarely see them.

“We’re actually seeing how they behave in their natural environment when people aren't watching them and they aren't busy watching us,” said Dave Côté, a biologist with the park.

The cameras were set up for a week during the spring of 2011 to capture images of river otters, but there has been an unexpected bonus … shots of many other species in the park.

“So we're seeing things like bears and coyotes and foxes coming to these sites that the otters use because they're trying to find scraps of food that the otters have pulled out of the ocean,” said Côté.

“It’s definitely 'the behind the scenes' footage that we're exposing with these cameras and we find it as interesting as anybody and it really helps us do our work.”

He said park officials plan to set the cameras up again this coming spring.
