Many parts of Newfoundland and Labrador have been whipped with high winds and either rain or snow depending on local temperatures.

Rainfall, snowfall, wind and blizzard warnings were in effect across Newfoundland Sunday morning.

The only areas not under weather warnings in the province were Gander, Grand Falls- Windsor, Buchans, Deer Lake, Humber Valley and the Churchill Falls areas.

In St. John's, rain started coming down hard just before 7 a.m. and in less than three hours 13 mm of rain fell, with wind gusts of up to 95 km/h.

The director of public works, Paul Mackey said the capital city had received about 75 calls for service by noon Sunday.

He said most of the calls were to complain about water build up on city streets because sewer openings are blocked with snow.

Mackey says snow-clearing crews have been sent to respond to those calls.

“They are out with heavy equipment ...clearing away catch basins trying to get the water to run freely so it will drain properly,” said Mackey.

The storm has also hit Labrador where visibility in blowing snow was reduced to less than down to 200 metres. By 9 a.m, more than 21 cms of snow had already fallen in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Many areas saw winds gust beyond 100 km/h. Wind speeds were recorded at 130km/h on Sagona Island in Burgeo, Daniel's Harbour and in Twillingate the wind reached 118 km/h.
