The teacher who sprayed Febreze over a student in Twilingate is getting backing from colleagues, her union says.
"We've gotten an enormous amount of support for this teacher from teachers across the province," said Lily Cole, the president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers Association.
Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association president Lily Cole is defending a teacher who has been suspended for spraying a student with air-freshener. (NLTA)Cole says she has personally spoken to the teacher in question, and is confident there will be a more balanced reaction to the story once an ongoing review is complete.
"Every classroom situation that you will deal with as a teacher is totally unique ... there is no book or no lesson plan that you can actually say, 'OK, do this, do that.'"
The mother of the student says he was sprayed because he ate capelin for lunch and was then teased by other students.
The story has touched off a debate since it broke earlier this week.
The Nova Central School District has suspended the teacher with pay, and issued an apology to Patti Rideout and her 10-year-old son Christian Roberts.
