The man accused of stabbing a young woman on Torbay Road last week made an appearance in court Monday, where he waived his right to a bail hearing.

David Harrington, 19, was calm as he was led into court. Harrington will remain in custody until he enters a plea later this month.

He is charged with stabbing a woman as she walked to her job at McDonald's on Torbay Road.

Harrington is a familiar face to many in the downtown. He has no fixed address, and recently spent time in Harbourside Park, with the Occupy NL movement.

Ken Canning of Occupy NL says people at the site were shocked by the arrest.

"Absolutely surprised, because from what I know of Dave, this is not something Dave would do — he has no reason to be up into the east end," Canning told CBC News. "It doesn't make fricking sense."

Canning says he has known Harrington for a couple of years.

Harrington — a "quiet, shy guy" — spent a couple of weeks at the Occupy site a few months back, Canning says, and wasn't spotted again until Friday. He left Saturday morning and was picked up by the police.

Police say Harrington stabbed the woman in her chest, just below the heart.

They won't say if they've found a weapon yet, but this weekend, searchers pored over an area of Torbay Road with shovels and metal detectors.

The 22-year-old victim is still in hospital, but her condition has improved.

Her family was in court today for the bail hearing, but declined comment.
