Three men — two from Newfoundland and Labrador and another from Ontario — have been fined thousands of dollars for illegal salmon netting in two different incidents.

One from Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador was fined $4,000 for illegally fishing Atlantic salmon with a net and $1,000 for fishing during a time when the fishing season was closed.

The man, who was not named in government news release, has 18 months to pay the fines and he is prohibited from fishing in inland waters or within 30 metres of coastal waters for three years.

The fines result from an investigation by fish and wildlife enforcement officers in the Little Burnt Bay area, on the northeast coast of Newfoundland, as a result of information received from the public Aug. 16, 2011.

Second incident

In another incident, two people have pleaded guilty to the charge of fishing with a net in inland waters.

After receiving a tip from the public, fish and wildlife enforcement officers observed both men setting a net in North West Brook near the community of Trinity July 21, 2011. They were arrested at the scene and later released to appear in court.

Both individuals, one from Scarborough, Ontario, and the other from Wareham, Trinity Bay, were fined $4,000 each.

They are prohibited from fishing in inland waters or being within 30 metres of coastal waters for three years. Their net was also forfeited to the Crown.
