The fledgling St. John's IceCaps have lost their very first game, during an exhibition game in Grand Falls-Windsor on Thursday night.

The IceCaps, who start regular season play on Oct. 7, were edged 5-2 by the Norfolk Admirals during a match at Joe Byrne Arena.

Norfolk, the minor league team for the Tampa Bay Lightning, scored the first four goals, and prevented the IceCaps — which is still assembling its regular-season squad — from scoring until the third period.

Corner Brook's Jason King scored one of the team's two goals.

"It's awesome to be able to play in front of Newfoundland fans," King said.

"It's definitely something I've kind of dreamed about it for years and to do so tonight definitely is pretty exciting."

Another exhibition game is set for Friday night in Gander.

The IceCaps play their first home game in St. John's on Oct. 14.

The team is owned by the parent company of the Winnipeg Jets, with former premier Danny Williams leading the franchise that has returned professional hockey to St. John's.
