New Democrats in Newfoundland and Labrador say they are still grieving over the death of federal leader Jack Layton, but they promise his memory will inspire them to keep working towards the coming provincial election.
About 60 NDP supporters gathered Tuesday night in the district of St. John's West.
There was a moment of silence before a section of Layton's last letter to Canadians was read.
"We have to carry that grief but at the same time we have to look forward and [Layton] wanted us to continue his work and realized he was just one person and it was the people that came together and the people that made the changes themselves," said NDP campaign volunteer Darcy Butler.
Wednesday night the party is scheduled to gather at Harbourside Park at 6 p.m. in downtown St. John's for a celebration of Layton's life.
The next Newfoundland and Labrador provincial election will be held on Oct. 11.
