Australian superstar Russell Crowe has been shooting in St. John's this week for a guest role on the CBC crime comedy-drama Republic of Doyle.

Crowe, who is performing in two concerts at a downtown St. John's theatre later this week with his friend and Great Big Sea frontman Alan Doyle, will appear in an episode of Republic of Doyle's third season, which will air next winter.

"Haven't slept, at least I can see signal hill from the window today, yesterday was all fog," Crowe tweeted early Monday morning. "Seagulls are the soundtrack. Off to work."

It's not known what role Crowe will play on the show, but a reunion of Crowe's "merry men" from the 2010 film Robin Hood is in the works, perhaps with a plot line with a criminal twist.

Alan Doyle, who played Allan A'Dayle in the Ridley Scott adventure film, is said to be reprising a small part — of a convict — that he played on Republic of Doyle last season.

Also in St. John's are actors Scott Grimes and Kevin Durand, who played Will Scarlet and Little John, respectively, in Robin Hood. There's speculation that Crowe, Grimes and Durand will play associates of Doyle's character.

As well, Grimes and Durand are also poised to perform with Crowe and Doyle at two concerts at the LSPU Hall, a historic theatre in downtown St. John's. Crowe's wife, the singer and actor Danielle Spencer, is also performing. Tickets for the shows sold out within minutes when they went on sale in July.

On Tuesday, Crowe and Doyle will release an album called The Crowe/Doyle Songbook, which will be available on iTunes and other digital providers. It is Crowe's first album since the Doyle-produced My Hand, My Heart in 2005. Crowe and Doyle played an impromptu gig at a St. John's pub that year.

For the current trip, Crowe brought his family to St. John's by private jet on Friday, and appears to be having a working vacation.

"I'm in Newfoundland with my wife and kids, doing a couple of gigs here and hanging out with friends, great place," he tweeted.

In a separate message, he tweeted, "Just another thought on the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, possibly the best tasting tap water on the planet here in St. John's."
