A Chinese man accused of stabbing a fellow student at Memorial University pleaded guilty Tuesday to assault causing bodily harm.

Qiang Tang, 23, made the plea at provincial court in St. John's where a preliminary inquiry was to have begun.

The Crown and defence lawyers have made a joint submission on sentencing, requesting Tang serve 12-months house arrest as well as a period of probation.

Judge David Orr will be announcing his decision at a sentencing hearing on Friday.

Tang was arrested in March after another student was stabbed in the chest at Spencer Hall, a building on the north side of Memorial University.

Police had said at the time that Tang and the stabbing victim were both studying English as a second language.
