Gary Drover speaks to reporters outside court in St. John's. CBCA Clarke's Beach man says he "certainly didn't intend to do anything" during an encounter with police on Saturday.
But the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary police say Gary Drover, 48, threatened an officer with an unusual weapon — a portable drill.
Drover's motor home was pulled over on Saturday by the RNC street patrol in Conception Bay South. Drover said he was on his way to get his van equipped with loudspeakers when police said he pulled the drill on an officer.
Drover has been charged with assault and possession of a weapon.
Drover told reporters outside a St. John's provincial courtroom he is seeking the Progressive Conservative nomination for the district of Port de Grave in this fall's upcoming provincial election.
Drover's conditions of release have been modified so he can attend political rallies in places where alcohol is served.
Drover's next court appearance is July 20.
