At a campaign stop near St. John's, federal Conservative Leader Stephen Harper told people in Newfoundland and Labrador to trust him to keep recent and past election promises.

Speaking at a hockey arena in Conception Bay South, Harper responded to a question about his trustworthiness.

"I think we have a good record here of delivering on what we’ve said we would do," he said. "We have a good record of serving the people in Newfoundland and Labrador."

Lower Churchill development

Harper reiterated the promise he made in St. John's on March 31 about a loan guarantee for a proposed hydroelectric development in Labrador.

"In terms of our commitment to financially assist, particularly as you know the focus on a loan guarantee for the development of Lower Churchill, I don’t think that is a question of trust in our government as it is a question of the choices that face the voters in this election," said Harper.

"A strong conservative majority government will be able to deliver on those commitments."

The Conservatives say any coalition that includes the Bloc Québécois won't be able to keep a promise to provide a federal loan guarantee.

5 Wing Goose Bay military base

Harper also renewed an earlier 2008 commitment to direct more resources to a military base in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, central Labrador.

"Our promise on 5 Wing Goose remains our commitment and we remain committed to the Canadian Armed Forces across this country," he said.

Defibrillators in arenas

Harper also spoke about the importance of putting defibrillators in hockey arenas.

He said if re-elected, a Conservative government will continue to work to install the equipment in every arena across the country.

Defibrillators help keep alive a person whose heart is failing.

Harper spoke at the Robert French Memorial Arena in Conception Bay South, which was named after a former MHA who died of heart disease.
