A man working at an iron ore mine in western Labrador died on the job Tuesday, with police opening an investigation into his death.

The man was a contracted employee working on a power line at the Iron Ore Company of Canada mine in Labrador City.

It was not immediately known what caused his death.

Special equipment was needed to retrieve the body from a high elevation. The worker was reported to be from a community in Newfoundland.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating.
