The Cain's Quest race will take snomobilers north to Kuujjuaq, Quebec. (CBC)Mild weather in Labrador has forced organizers to change the route of an annual 2,000-kilometre snowmobile race known as Cain's Quest.
The race, which has traditionally run through Labrador, will still start and end in western Labrador, but this year it will be rerouted north to the Quebec town of Kuujjuaq, Ungava Bay.
Last year, warm weather cancelled the event.
"The weather forecast for eastern Labrador and the northern coast of Labrador seems to be as bad or worse than last year. Last year, we waited in hopes that it was going to change and it didn't," said Cain's Quest co-chair Todd Kent.
"Cancellation wasn't an option this year," said Kent.
He said two cancellations in a row would threaten the event's future.
Kent said there is a lot of work to do before racers hit the trails in mid-March.
"This particular piece of property between Labrador and Kuujjuaq in Ungava Bay — there's a degree of unfamiliarity — so we want to make sure that the check points are strategically located because it is so remote and we have to bring our fuel in," said Kent.
