A passenger was taken to a hospital in western Newfoundland after he became ill on a transatlantic flight Tuesday.

The man, 46, may have had a stroke aboard a Delta Air Lines flight from Paris that was headed to Augusta, Ga. The plan made an emergency landing Tuesday afternoon at the airport in Stephenville.

The passenger was taken first to hospital in Stephenville, and then was transferred to Western Memorial Hospital in Corner Brook.

"Prior to making the emergency landing, passengers and crew onboard provided emergency care to the male for extended period of time," RCMP said in a statement.

Police said the passenger was listed in critical condition.

The flight continued after spending a couple of hours on the ground.
