Heavy, wet snow created dangerous driving conditions that resulted in numerous vehicle collisions on Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula roads Tuesday.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said it received more than a dozen calls about accidents in the afternoon and a spokesman urged drivers to be careful.

"Our weather is very unpredictable. ... We are asking motorists to slow down and stay alert when driving, and if you don't have to be out maybe stay home until the roads are cleared off," said Const. Tanya Campbell.

Campbell said all the reported collisions were fender-benders without serious injuries. Many were in the St. John's area.

City officials said every available piece of heavy equipment was being used to clear roads. The RCMP was also advising drivers to slow down, watch their distance between other vehicles and buckle up.

The Trans-Canada Highway is snow-covered and very slick, and blowing snow means poor visibility in many areas.

"We've got numerous sideroads — the Veteran's Memorial Highway, our highways in around Bay Roberts, Harbour Grace, Whitbourne, down the coast of Trinity shore, Placentia and so on — that are experiencing the same sort of weather conditions. And even though the speeds are lower, the chances of sliding into another vehicle certainly is there," said RCMP Sgt Boyd Merrill.
