Some people who suffered property damage during Hurricane Igor should soon be receiving financial compensation from Newfoundland and Labrador's government.

Municipal Affairs Minister Kevin O'Brien said Thursday that cheques have been cut for people hit hard by the storm on Sept. 21.

"We've got six cheques gone out in the mail, and we got 30 verbal agreements in regards to settlement of claims that will go through the process of issuing cheques in the next couple of days," said O'Brien.

Government officials will meet this month with more people with claims, said O'Brien.

Earlier this week, the Insurance Bureau of Canada said people in eastern Newfoundland have made more than $65 million in insurance claims related to Hurricane Igor.

A bureau official said Tuesday that people affected by the storm have filed thousands of claims for damages caused by wind, sewer backups, fallen trees and above-ground leaks.

The storm left damage in communities on the Avalon, Burin and Bonavista peninsulas.
