A St. John's resident inadvertently drove his Toyota into his Cowan Heights home on Thursday evening. (CBC) A St. John's man drove his car through the front of his own home on Thursday evening.
The Frecker Drive resident was backing his Toyota out of his driveway as his neighbour was doing the same thing.
After the vehicles collided in the street, the man shifted his car into drive and hit the gas pedal to move forward. The car, however, drove straight into the house.
Tom McGrath, the other driver, told CBC News he believes his neighbour's Toyota malfunctioned.
"[The] first thing he said was, 'I don't know what happened. My accelerator stuck,' " McGrath said.
"He said he hit the brakes the whole way, and I heard the squeal, but he couldn't stop."
No one was injured in Thursday's incident. The driver's wife and their grandchild were passengers in his car.
Toyota has recalled millions of vehicles since last summer, amid reports of sudden acceleration linked to floormats as well as separate complaints of sticking accelerator pedals.
