Newfoundland and Labrador's fuels regulator on Thursday allowed retailers to raise their gas prices by almost two cents per litre.

The Public Utilities Board raised the maximum price for all grades of gasoline by 1.8 cents or 1.9 cents per litre. The difference is due to rounding for harmonized sales tax in different geographic pricing zones.

The increase comes on the heels of three consecutive price declines in August.

The change means the maximum price of a litre of self-serve unleaded gas on the Avalon Peninsula is now $1.071.

Prices vary across the country, from $1.096 in the Gander area to $1.236 in southern Labrador.

The PUB also raised the maximum prices for diesel, from 2.2 cents to 2.5 cents per litre.

As well, a hike of 2.17 cents per litre was approved for both furnace oil and stove oil. Propane is up by 0.5 cents per litre.

The chart below shows how average gas prices in Newfoundland and Labrador have changed in the last 12 months, compared to both the Canadian average and the price of oil.
