Five people who were enjoying a pleasure boat trip just outside St. John's were rescued Thursday.

The pleasure craft issued a mayday signal around 2 p.m. that a wave had swamped the craft.

The Marine Institute's training vessel, the Anne S. Pierce, was nearby and responded to the call. The crew dispatched a fast-rescue craft to pick up the five people.

The pleasure boat had overturned after the rescue, but was safely towed to shore.
