Second place was plenty sweet for Bishop's Falls Tuesday night when the town took home a $25,000 cheque for its silver performance in CBC's Kraft Hockeyville contest.

Mayor Bob Hobbs said the money, which was guaranteed when the town was named a finalist in the competition, isn't as important as the boost it gave his community.

"People are very proud of what they accomplished," said Hobbs.

"People look at each other and talk about what they did and what they accomplished, it's done wonders."

Nicholas Fancey, who was the Hockeyville Youth Ambassador for the community, presented the cheque to Hobbs.

Hobbs said the town hasn't decided what it will do with the money but it's expected it will be spent on the aging Pat O'Reilly Memorial Stadium.

Glenn Fancey, Nicholas's father, said the arena needs a lot of work. He said many of the arena's boards are rotting and steel beams in its ceiling need to be scraped and painted.

The stadium, named after a resident who volunteered to help local kids play hockey, could also use some new dressing rooms, Fancey said.

Dundas, Ontario, won the 2010 Hockeyville competition. It won $100,000 to renovate its arena and will play host to a pre-season NHL game between the Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres in September.

Harbour Grace, eastern Newfoundland, was a finalist in the Hockeyville contest in 2009.
