A woman was seriously injured Sunday night when an ambulance struck a moose on a highway in eastern Newfoundland, police said.

The woman, 51, was a passenger in an ambulance that hit a moose around 10:10 p.m. on the Trans-Canada Highway in the Holyrood area.

Sgt. Mike Ouellette said while the woman's injuries were serious, her life was not believed to be at risk.

The ambulance, which was not on an emergency call at the time of the collision, was extensively damaged.

A 41-year-old man who was driving the ambulance was treated for minor injuries.

Both were taken to the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's for treatment, Ouellette said
