A central Newfoundland man pleaded guilty Monday to 11 charges related to abuse involving children in his care.

Glenn Budgell, 34, was accused of failing to help a sick five-year-old boy in Grand Falls-Windsor.

But provincial court in Gander Monday was told Budgell also had injured two other children in his care.

Budgell was charged after Grand Falls-Windsor District RCMP and the provincial Department of Child, Youth and Family Services conducted a joint investigation, and in the process found that a boy was not given medical attention he needed.

Officials immediately had the child sent to the Central Regional Health Care Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor. He was later transferred to the Janeway children's hospital in St. John's for further treatment.

Court was told that the boy had been placed in an extremely hot bath, although there is no evidence that this was done deliberately.

However, court was told that Budgell did nothing to help the boy, until authorities visited the house after receiving a tip.

The boy was released from hospital in late April. Court was told that he was so severely injured that he required skin grafts, that he is disfigured and that his legs are permanently disfigured.

The court was also told that Budgell struck two other boys in his care, and that when authorities arrived in the home they had bruises on their faces.

The Crown is recommending that Budgell receive a prison sentence of three and a half years. The defence agrees with the submission.

Meanwhile, the Crown withdrew five charge against Budgell.

A Grand Falls-Windsor woman has also been charged with failing to provide the necessities of life to a child.

The identity of the Grand Falls-Windsor woman, 33, cannot be released to protect the identity of her five-year-old son. She was charged in connection to her son's care.
