The City of St. John's is working on a plan to build new public units for the first time in 17 years.

The city plans to build 45 units in Pleasantville, which is being redeveloped for a broad housing plan that includes residential streets, condominiums and apartments.

David Blackmore, the city's director of building and property management, said a new approach is being taken to public housing.

"We're looking at, first of all, the demographics that have changed somewhat," Blackmore said.

"Years ago we would be building three- and four-bedroom units. Now the demand is for one- and two-bedroom units, and actually heavily weighted on the one bedroom units. We're looking at, I guess, bringing together housing support services and those who need those services."

Support services, Blackmore said, will assist people who need help finding and keeping a unit.

Construction should start by the end of the year.
