The town of St. Anthony on Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula held its second rally in two days on Saturday to protest the loss of its air ambulance service.

The provincial government has decided to move the service to Happy Valley-Goose Bay in Labrador.

Government officials said the move was precipitated by the death of a worker at the Iron Ore Company of Canada mine near Labrador City.

The man died more than a week ago after he fell from some scaffolding. It took 11 hours for the nearest air ambulance to arrive and the man was dead by the time it got there.

However, the mayor of St. Anthony, Ernest Simms, said the move was political payback because the St. Anthony area voted against the government in a recent by-election.

Simms said about 1,500 people attended the rally Saturday night and he's still hopeful the decision to move the service can be reversed.

He said he'll meet with members of the town council Sunday afternoon to determine their next step.
