'Government must immediately address the urgent need for a permanent air ambulance in Labrador West,' NDP leader Lorraine Michael said Friday. (CBC) The leader of the NDP in Newfoundland and Labrador is calling for a permanent air ambulance to be stationed in western Labrador.
Lorraine Michael said a fatal incident Thursday should never have taken place.
A 56 year-old man fell from a platform at the Iron Ore Co. of Canada's Labrador City mine and died while waiting for an air ambulance to arrive.
Michael says it's shocking that the man had to wait for 12 hours for emergency transportation, especially considering the nearest hospital is just two hours away by air.
“Government must immediately address the urgent need for a permanent air ambulance in Labrador West to ensure injured workers have reasonable access to emergency medical services,” Michael said.
Michael also said she questions whether the provincial government is truly committed to providing the proper service to the area.
