A Mount Pearl student has taken a vow of silence to raise money to help Haiti rebuild from a powerful earthquake in January.

"Like everyone's always telling me that I talk, like, way too much," said O'Donel High School student Jess Wickens. "I figured why not give that up for a little while, and everyone’s going to donate to that. So, why not just give the funds to Haiti?"

Wickens said her goal is to remain silent for three days. She won’t speak, email, text, or do any social networking, but she will continue to do school work and keep a written journal while she’s silent.

Wickens said she’ll stop communicating Wednesday at 12 p.m. She has already raised more than $650.

Many developed parts of the country were turned to rubble when an earthquake hit Haiti Jan. 12. The country’s government estimates that more than 200,000 people died because of the quake.
