The city of St. John's is donating $50,000 to help Haiti rebuild after January's devastating earthquake.

"I think it's absolutely marvelous and it's an indication of how sincere the people of this city have been, are, and will continue, I hope, to be," said Mayor Dennis O'Keefe, who wants the city to take on a specific project so residents can see precisely where their money is going.

Deputy Mayor Shannie Duff agrees.

"I guess we're going to have to look at some process that's transparent and fair to people who can suggest projects to us, where we might apply that funding," she said.

There are a handful of development projects in Haiti headed up by people from this province.

Karen Huxter, originally from western Newfoundland, is looking for donations to rebuild an orphanage she operates in Haiti. It was damaged in the earthquake.

A doctor from St. John's, Robert Walley, is also looking for money to help him set up a clinic to provide medical care in the country.

Five years ago, when city council provided money for Tsunami relief in Southeast Asia, much of it ended up sitting in a bank account for years.
