The federal and Newfoundland and Labrador governments will spend more than $30 million building and reconstructing roads and bridges in the province.

Peter MacKay, Newfoundland and Labrador's cabinet representative, announced Friday that a total of $30.9 million will be spent on nine road improvement projects and the rebuilding of two bridges

Tom Hedderson, the province’s transportation minister, joined Mackay in making the announcement in St. John's.

The cost will be split 50/50 between Ottawa and the province.

The federal government is providing the money under its plan to stimulate the economy.

"Canada's Economic Action Plan is ensuring that the province of Newfoundland and Labrador will come out of this period of economic uncertainty stronger than ever before," said MacKay in a release.

The work involves upgrading sections of roads outside of St. John's including:

  • Colliers and Harbour Main.
  • Ochre Pit Cove and Blackhead.
  • Gaskiers and St.Vincent's.
  • The Burin Peninsula Highway from TCH to North Harbour.
  • Pine Pond Pit and Musgrave Harbour.
  • Georges Point and the Horwood intersection.
  • Portland Creek and Daniel's Harbour.
  • Wiltondale and the Gros Morne National Park boundary.
  • Corner Brook industrial access road and Wheeler's Road.

The bridge work involves Sandy Lake Narrows Bridge and the Outer Cove Bridge.

MacKay is a Nova Scotia MP who has responsibilities for Newfoundland and Labrador because there weren’t any Conservatives from the province elected in the last federal election.
