St. John's municipal politicians say the city wants to help with the long-term reconstruction of earthquake-devastated Haiti.
They say the city is looking at teaming up with other Canadian cities to sponsor the reconstruction of a public facility such as a school.
"I think this approach of either twinning with an organization or a community and making sure that what we do has a long lasting effect on the country, is the wisest thing that this council has done in a long, long time," said city councillor Tom Hann
The council didn't talk about how much it's willing to spend, but members did say they plan to talk to the mayors of other cities and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
"Haitians are going to need as much help over the next long-term period of time, as they need the immediate help right now, which is forthcoming by the international community," said St. John's Mayor Dennis O'Keefe.
