Central Newfoundland-based members of Canada's military are going to Haiti to help with the relief effort in the aftermath of last week's devastating earthquake.

"Right now they'll probably be embedded with the disaster relief team and when they hit the ground, which should be either today or tomorrow, the needs will be assessed by the local commander," said 9 Wing Gander Lt.-Col. Chris Conway.

Conway said a military police officer from Gander will provide security on flights landing in Haiti, and three members of the construction engineering flight will help with reconstruction.

He said it's possible that the base will send some more personnel from Gander to Haiti.

Several of the officers just returned from Afghanistan.
