A human skull found near St. John's in 2001 is from a person who was killed, police say.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said its investigators have learned details about the victim.

The skull was found near Minerals Road in Conception Bay South, about 30 kilometres west of St. John's.

Investigators will release details at a media briefing Thursday afternoon

In 2001, police said they carried out an extensive search of the area where the skull was found but unearthed no other body parts.

They said at the time that Dr. Simon Avis, chief medical officer for Newfoundland and Labrador, was working with experts from the RCMP's Halifax forensic laboratory, the University of British Columbia's bureau of legal dentistry in Vancouver and the RCMP's crime laboratory in Ottawa.

An analysis concluded back then that the skull belonged to a male between the ages of 20 and 40 with shoulder-length hair.
