Liberal Marshall Dean was sworn in Tuesday as the newest member of the provincial legislature. (CBC)The newest member of Newfoundland and Labrador's house of assembly was sworn in Tuesday at Government House in St. John's.
Liberal Marshall Dean won the byelection for the district of The Straits-White Bay North in September.
He's the first new face to join the Liberal caucus since the party's defeat in the last provincial election, in 2007.
Dean has been appointed as the party's fisheries critic.
"The fishery is important for the sustainability of rural Newfoundland," he said, "and if we don't find a way to do secondary processing in areas like the Straits, the future is bleak. So that's the number one priority for me."
Dean will take his seat in the legislature when the house of assembly opens next week.
