The Newfoundland folk group The Once took home four awards at the MUSICNL gala on Sunday night in St. John's.

The band, which includes Phil Churchill, Geraldine Hollett and Andrew Dale, won in the rising star, album of the year, folk roots group, and group of the year categories. The awards are presented annually to recognize performers from the province.

Other multiple winners included Curtis Andrews and Karla Pilgrim, each picking up two. Andrews won male artist and instrumental artist awards, while Pilgrim won in the female artist and country artist categories.

The group Shanneyganock was named entertainer of the year. The Novaks were named best pop rock group. Singer Colleen Power was named alternative artist of 2009. Chris Kirby won the jazz and blues award, and Rod Jackson won the gospel award.

Terry Penney was named SOCAN songwriter of the year for Town that Time Forgot.
