Students and faculty at Memorial University have been hit hard by flu-like symptoms in recent weeks while Canada braces for swine flu outbreaks.
The university's pandemic planning committee says 680 students in St. John's and Corner Brook, in western Newfoundland, have reported such symptoms since September.
The biggest spike in illness was the week of Oct. 26, with more than 250 students and faculty members reportedly sick. More than 17,000 students attend Memorial.
University officials say the school won't close because of the flu or H1N1 fears.
"We will be continuing to operate," said David Head of the university's pandemic planning committee. "Different people get impacted at different points in time over the semester.
"We have no intentions at this point to cancel classes it doesn't factor into our planning. We'll work with students on an individual basis to lessen the academic impact it may have on them."
Head said sick faculty and students are using the internet at home to get some course work done.
