The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says it has made 15 arrests of prostitutes and johns in the downtown area of St. John's during the past few months.
Enforcement was stepped up after residents in a high prostitution area, along the Duckworth Street, Church Hill and Henry Street areas, started complaining publicly last winter.
The frustrated residents started writing down the licence plate numbers of people who were picking up prostitutes, and that information was then passed on to the police.
The neighbourhood even set up a Facebook site where they posted the information, with the numbers on it, in an attempt to embarrass johns into staying away.
Police said they first offered help to the prostitutes to try to get them off the streets, but when it didn't work, they started making arrests.
