People in Newfoundland and Labrador will be able to access the vaccine developed to fight swine flu next week.

Provincial Health Minister Jerome Kennedy said in a release that a voluntary, province-wide immunization program will begin the week of Oct. 26.

Kennedy said the province has secured enough of the H1N1 vaccine "for anyone in the province who wants it."

The injection won't be available in doctors offices. Instead, mass immunization clinics will be held throughout the province. Details about where and when those clinics will be held will be released by individual health authorities during the next few weeks, Kennedy said.

Word of a start date for the immunization program came the same day the H1N1 vaccine was approved for use across Canada.

"Health Canada has officially authorized this vaccine, which means it has proven to be both safe and effective," the province's medical health officer, Dr. Faith Stratton, is quoted as saying in the release.

"The H1N1 influenza vaccine is the best protection against the pandemic virus and we are encouraging residents to avail of it."
