The search and rescue operation to locate the missing crewmember of the Sea Gypsy ended Monday evening.

"All hope for his survival has unfortunately diminished due to the prevailing weather and sea conditions and frigid water temperatures," a Canadian Forces news release said.

The Sea Gypsy sank about 130 kilometres east of St. John's, N.L., on Saturday. Five fishermen were on board the shrimp boat.

The military said its aircraft and coast guard vessels have left the search area.

"The assets, the actual vessels, have left the locations but at the same time a notice has been put out to anyone in that area to keep an eye out, " Maj. Paul Doucette said.

A helicopter from 9 Wing Gander recovered three survivors and a dead crewmember and airlifted them to St John's.
