Municipal election nominations for St. John's closed Tuesday afternoon with 32 people competing for 11 spots.

Three people are running for mayor, two for deputy mayor and nine are running for the four at-large positions on council. The rest are running for five ward positions.

The field is a mix of new faces and some who are well known around the council chamber — for example, Ward 3 candidate Bruce Tilley, who spent 10 years as a councillor in the 1980s and '90s and was the long time general manager of the city's board of trade.

"I've got the interest and I'll be a full-time councillor because that's all I'm going to focus on," he said. "I've been retired for a few years and I'm doing what I want to do voluntarily. And I think it's now to step up to the plate and give Ward 3 a good voice."

Mark Wilson, the lead singer of reggae band the Idlers and an organic farmer who is running for mayor, said a vote for him is a vote for change.

"Vote for some invigoration at city hall and inspiration for change in the city and moving forward," he said.

Before Wilson could be nominated though, he had to clear up outstanding parking tickets.

The number of people running for council has been steadily declining since 1997 when 43 people ran.

Municipal elections across the province will be held Sept. 29.
