The leader of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador wants both the federal and provincial governments to help with providing cellphone service for southern Labrador.

Yvonne Jones, who represents the district in the house of assembly, said she's been trying to find a company willing to provide the service.

Jones said one company, Lynx Communications, told her the service could be feasible but they'd require communities in the area to help pay for the hardware.

Jones said that could be problematic.

"Most of them can't afford to maintain the water and sewer services and road infrastructure services they currently have in their communities, so investing in technology infrastructure would not be high on their priority list," Jones said.

According to Jones, providing cellphone service for each community could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
