A woman was airlifted to hospital in St. John's Tuesday morning after a highway accident near the eastern Newfoundland community of Trepassey.

Police said the woman swerved to avoid an ATV on Route 10 near Biscay Bay and ended up in a pond.

One woman in the car escaped before it sank. The other woman was trapped in the submerged vehicle.

Two people rescued the unconscious woman and gave her CPR. She was revived and airlifted to St. John's in stable condition. The people who helped her left the scene.

The couple who helped the woman, a man and a woman visiting from Quebec, told the RCMP that they just did what had to be done and were only glad that the victim survived.
