Newfoundland and Labrador is the only province in Canada to have gained jobs over the past month, according to figures released Friday by Statistics Canada.

The province gained 2,500 jobs in June compared to May numbers. The number of those employed part time went up 6.1 per cent.

Despite those figures, the unemployment rate edged up to 15.6 per cent from 15.1 per cent in May, as more people in the province were looking for work.

The unemployment rate is defined as the percentage of people in the labour force actively looking for work.

Nationally, the unemployment rate rose two percentage points to 8.6 per cent in June.
