RCMP in southern Newfoundland say a drunk driver was arrested shortly after he rode through an area that included a school and a hospital.

Sgt. Wayne Edgecombe said police on the Burin Peninsula were called around 1 p.m. on Wednesday about a report of an impaired driver near a school as well as the hospital in Salt Pond.

"The driver refused to stop for police and was subsequently arrested a short distance later," Edgecombe said in a statement Thursday.

A 47-year-old man was scheduled to appear in provincial court in Grand Bank on Thursday on multiple charges, including flight from police, impaired driving and driving while disqualified.
