The pilot of a small twin-engine plane died Sunday morning when his aircraft crashed in southeastern Labrador about six kilometres from its destination.

The 43-year-old pilot from the Labrador Straits region was on his way from Blanc Sablon, Que., to Port Hope Simpson to airlift a person to St. Anthony when the crash occurred about 8:30 a.m. local time Sunday, RCMP said in a release. Port Hope Simpson is about 200 kilometres north of Forteau.

The pilot was talking to the ground crew in Port Hope Simpson about foggy conditions when contact was lost. Shortly after, witnesses reported smoke in nearby hills.

The unidentified pilot was alone in the aircraft when he died.

A Hercules from Nova Scotia and members of the Canadian Rangers and Triple 4 Squadron from Goose Bay, N.L., were dispatched to the crash site, the rescue co-ordination centre in Halifax said.

The pilot's body has been taken to Goose Bay.

Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board officials will fly in Monday morning or Tuesday to investigate, police said.
