An eastern Newfoundland woman who thought she was suffering from the pains of a kidney stone says she was shocked to learn she was pregnant — and about to deliver.
Port de Grave resident Juanita Stead went to a nearby hospital on New Year's Eve, after back pains worsened while she was at a party. She said her brother-in-law, an ambulance attendant, insisted she go to hospital.
After an X-ray was taken, Stead was told she was about to have a full-term baby.
"It was quite a shocker," Stead told CBC News on Wednesday, about the birth of her second child.
Although plus-size, she said she had not had any indications she might be pregnant.
"I went through nine months without seeing a doctor. I had my regular menstrual period every month, and went through the full nine months without even being sick — never put on [any] extra weight, wore my regular clothes, everyday clothes," she said.
Her baby, Nicholas, weighed seven pounds and 12 ounces when he arrived early on New Year's Day, and is healthy and well.
She joked that her husband, Terry, however, almost had a heart attack when he learned the couple would have another child.
