A Liberal MP from Newfoundland and Labrador says he has been approached by federal Conservatives but denies reports he was offered a plum appointment if he should cross the floor.

The Canadian Press reported that Scott Simms, who was re-elected in October in Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor riding, informed a Liberal caucus meeting this week that he was given that promise by one of the "young bucks" from Alberta.

Attributing the information to Liberal insiders, CP reported Wednesday that Simms told the caucus he had four conversations with an Alberta MP before the MP gave up.

Unnamed Liberals told CP that the overtures — which allegedly were made to at least one other MP — were a sign of desperation in the federal Tories in response to a Liberal-NDP plan to defeat the government and form a new coalition government.

Contacted by CBC News on Wednesday night, Simms confirmed he was approached by federal Conservatives.

However, Simms said no offer was ever made.
