A St. John's-area man has been ordered to stand trial in Newfoundland Supreme Court in a high-profile double slaying.

A preliminary inquiry determined Wednesday there is sufficient evidence to try Joey Oliver on two counts of first-degree murder in the 1993 shooting deaths of Dale Worthman and Kimberley Lockyer.

The court also ordered Oliver, 38, to stand trial on an additional charge of being an accessory after the fact.

Worthman and Lockyer disappeared from their Portugal Cove-St. Philip's apartment in 1993. Their bodies were found in July 2006 and autopsies showed they had been shot in the head.

A publication ban is in effect on evidence presented at the preliminary inquiry.

Worthman's mother, Beryl, who was in court Wednesday, said she was happy with the court's ruling.

"And I guess now we'll just have to see what the jury has to say about it. It's been a long 15 years of hell. And it's slowly, partly, coming to an end anyway," she said.
