John Ashton, pictured here in 2007, campaigned tirelessly for autonomy for Grenfell College. (CBC)An academic who fought vigorously for greater autonomy for a western Newfoundland college has died.
John Ashton, principal of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook, died Saturday at his home after a lengthy illness. He was 55.
Ashton campaigned for independence for Grenfell from Memorial University after his appointment in 2004.
The Newfoundland and Labrador government has directed Memorial University to grant the college independence in many matters, although enabling legislation has not yet been passed.
Ashton, an English-born folklorist who earned a doctorate from Memorial, began teaching at Grenfell in 1982.
A service will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Redeemer in Corner Brook.
