Pair charged over Bay of Islands street-racing

Two people have been charged following what police have a called a night of street-racing earlier this month on a western Newfoundland highway.
RCMP said two drivers raced their cars two weeks ago along the north shore of the Bay of Islands.
One car left the road at high speed in Irishtown. While the driver suffered a hand injury, a passenger suffered serious injuries to his head and leg.
"He was not released until several days later," said RCMP Sgt. John Hancock.
"This type of activity will not be tolerated, and it will be actively pursued by the RCMP if a complaint comes in."
Matthew Whitehorn, 21, a resident of Corner Brook, and Joanne Lovell, 22, a resident of McIvors, are each facing a charge of dangerous operation of a vehicle while street racing causing bodily harm.
They are expected to return to provincial court in July in Corner Brook.
