Production has resumed at an oil field off Newfoundland's east coast, after heavy ice forced a halt for two days.

Husky Energy resumed operations at its White Rose field, about 350 kilometres southeast of St. John's, on Thursday night after ice conditions in the area had improved.

Ice conditions off Newfoundland's coast have been especially thick this week, with aerial surveillance showing pack ice stretching as far as the eye can see.

On Tuesday, White Rose managers stopped pumping oil at the field, and airlifted non-essential personnel from the Searose floating production vessel.

Husky, the majority owner and operator of the field, had also moved a drilling rig that had been exploring in the area to an ice-free zone.
