A St. John's rally organized to counter anti-sealing protests being held around the world Saturday attracted more than 200 people.

Sealers, fur industry executives and government officials were among those who turned out to support the annual seal hunt, in an event that was described by observers as "enthusiastic."

Many of those attending the demonstration wore sealskin coats, gloves and boots and the mood was festive and upbeat.

Mark Small is a sealer who travelled over 200 miles to show his support.

Small said anti-sealing activists have garnered far too much publicity by playing on people's emotions.

He said the hunt is humane and sustainable.

Sealers expect to head to the floes around Atlantic Canada later this spring in search of the seal herds.
